Marco knelt beside the evaporation edge, boots sinking a finger’s depth into the cool, sticky ground while his beagle sniffed the leaf mosaic nearby. A gentle drip struck the main puddle, rings sliding across the mirrored sky and breaking just before they reached Marco’s hand. He rolled the fragment between thumb and forefinger; grit clung to its rough half, yet the smooth strip felt almost polished. Ulric, reading on a dry island stone a few steps away, glanced over like a quiet mentor but kept silent. The damp path was nurturing seedlings that pushed up through grains of sand, and somewhere behind the trees a narrow creek gurgled. If the rings stayed still, Marco could rinse the piece, so he waited, shoulders loose, eyes fixed on the settling water.

A passing jogger’s foot splashed the margin, clouding the puddle and pushing fresh mud over Marco’s find. He stood, shifted strategy, and crossed to the drip zone beneath the branch. There, slower drops offered clearer water, yet each drop smacked his fingers, making him flinch and almost lose grip. He lifted the shard to the gutter trickle along the stone edge; the steady thread washed away the last film of dirt. Lines of glaze appeared, blue and curved like tiny waves from a distant ocean. The “shell” revealed itself as plate pottery, broken long ago and smoothed by time in some far tide pool. Marco exhaled and brushed the cleaned surface once more, then set the bright fragment on a warming patch of stone. Behind him, new rings spread across the puddle, widening long after his hands left the water.
