Shadow Over the Clear Glass-

English 原文
The blue glass in the middle row stood almost clear, only a faint ribbon of colour hugging its inner edge. A hawk glided past the open kitchen window at the same moment, bronze wings briefly scattering honey-bright light across the table. Wren and Maeve, still rosy from a brisk walk earlier in the weekend, paused beside the glass row; water beaded on the cool shadowed glass, while the warmer one near the windowsill shone like copper. Celery stalks waited inside each vessel, their pale ribs beginning to show thin red and yellow stripes, yet the centre glass looked plain. Maeve tapped the magnifying lens against her notebook, and pencils rolled with a soft rattle toward the prep area where a woven basket held spare stalks.
A soft gust followed the hawk’s passing and drifted through the window, chilling the blue glass more than the others; the stalk inside seemed slow, its leaves drooping. If the draft kept flowing, the colour would hide inside the stalk instead of reaching the tips. Wren slid the glass toward the warmer edge of sunlight, but the motion loosened a drop that spilled onto the towel, forming an irregular shape like a distant mountain. The girls leaned closer and noticed thin sapphire lines already climbing one side of the celery; the dye had travelled, just not evenly. The hawk settled on the fence outside, and its shifting shadow crossed the table, turning the clear water momentarily deep blue. The discovery rewrote their worry: uneven travel itself could become the day’s record.
Only a spoonful of dye remained on the supply shelf. They carried the bottle to the sink, where an adult trimmed a fresh stalk on the cutting board and rinsed it quickly. Back at the windowsill, Wren poured the final swirl into the glass; colour spread through the water and caught the afternoon glow. The very last drop darkened the rising stripes, then disappeared. Maeve turned the clear bottle upright, showing nothing left inside.

Maeve
