English 原文
Flour had drifted for hours, and a brown sparrow darted low across the flour packing table, its wings brushing the powdery boards. Kit braced her forearm under a half-full canvas bag; her elbow quivered from the constant weight. Winona pressed both palms on the iron scale pan to still its wobble while the tower’s vibration travelled through her boots. A coil of coarse twine, speckled white, lay between them, no thicker than a pencil. Above, the main shaft groaned whenever a gust filled the sails, and the leather belt slapped a guide post in an uneven beat that made the hopper shiver. Grain poured faster, sending a veiled cloud past their faces; the sparrow hopped aside, leaving three-toed prints that looked like a garnish on fresh dough. Its quick glances seemed to imply earlier visits, yet neither girl spoke; their shoulders simply rocked with the shifting rhythm.
The cloth chute had been nudged off centre earlier, so every jolt shook a fresh fraction of grain onto the floorboards. Winona bent her knees, back tense, and heaved the chute sideways; Kit steadied the hopper, feeling its wooden rim bite into her palms. They reached for the lone twine at once, knuckles bumping. Winona slid it toward Kit, keeping a scant loop for herself. Kit flicked open the small packing knife, trimmed her share, and tied the canvas bag. A loosened fibre drifted away; the sparrow seized it mid-air, wings beating near their faces. The thread clung to its beak like playful garnish before the bird arrowed upward. Beside the scale, a tin of pale euphoria powder—used to flavour celebration buns—rattled with each vibration. Kit’s shoulders loosened as the sparrow threaded the twine into a growing nest among the rafters; those dusty prints no longer implied trespass but careful gathering. Winona leaned on the long iron lever; the widened millstone gap cooled the flour and stopped the clumps.
By evening, the sails hung still against a calmer sky, and the milling room stood quiet. Kit’s angular boot print and Winona’s lighter tread remained in the thin flour film beside the scale, and the halved twine coil waited on the bench. From the rafters the sparrow glided down, tugged another thread from the coil, and sprang back toward its hidden nest.
