“Who left this branch swaying like a loose gate?” Tara steadied the three-rung ladder under a steel-grey pear tree. Silver light filtered between overlapping leaves, slicing the aisle into narrow stripes. A robin on the hedgerow cocked its head at the movement, its orange breast the only warm patch among bluish shadows. The branch had been bent by earlier pickers, a shallow groove clearly marking the spot. Tara’s goal was plain: collect twelve unblemished pears before the other rows completely emptied. That number would substantiate the day’s tally kept by the nearby worker at the gate. She climbed the first rung; soft ground sank beneath the ladder, tilting it gently sideways. She exercised caution, shifted her weight, and caught the lowest branch that hung just above her shoulder blades. Four cool, firm pears dropped into the canvas-lined basket with evenly spaced muted thuds below.

Back on the grass, she noticed a shallow hollow where the ladder’s feet had been sinking. She dragged the ladder two steps toward a firmer, blue-grey patch and climbed again, just as a gust flapped the leaves. The branch swayed away, so her reaching hand closed on empty air; only three pears yielded before the motion grew wild. Above her, two squirrels broke into a quarrel over a scarred nut cap, their chatter shaking more twigs than her picking did. Seven pears now weighed the basket, yet the required dozen remained a distant possibility. She waited, counting the seconds between wind pulses; if the breeze calmed for half a heartbeat, the branch would pause within reach. On the next lull, the green mass drifted back toward her shoulder line, and she moved in quick order. Left hand steadied wood, right hand twisted stems, claiming five more pears in one smooth sweep.

While stepping away, she almost crushed a silver-stemmed seedling clinging to a damp patch beneath the ladder. She lifted the basket and felt the combined weight press against her forearms, blue-grey shadows sliding across the fruit domes. A robin swooped from the hedgerow and landed on the rim, tilting the load so one pear rolled toward the grass. During that brief dispute between balance and gravity, Tara nudged the fruit back into line. She slid the final pear from her jacket pocket into the gap left; wicker strands drew tight, leaving no room at all.
