He had already dragged one thick branch from the debris zone and wedged it against the mossy top, hoping to build a narrow ramp. A passing intergenerational line of hikers walked by on the far side clearing, boots thudding in different rhythms, yet no one paused; the task remained his alone.

The first branch sank, so he added a second, lighter limb, pressing it hard until bark fibers bent. Still unsure, he placed a flat rock near the top, increasing weight and angle. The ramp now looked like an answer yet behaved like a dilemma; its three parts shifted against each other whenever the terrier tested it with a paw. Wyatt set his warm metal flask on the log to free his hands, unaware that the flask’s heat thawed the thin layer of sap beneath. Minutes later the flask slid, tapped the top branch, and the loose rock wobbled forward, bumping a puddle and sending muddy water over his boots—an accidental cascade driven by temperature.
