English 原文
Only ten metres of spare line remained on Zara’s plastic reel, each turn giving a dry rattle that faded as the drum thinned. The line itself sang a rising whistle above the string-run corridor, while the kite’s nylon snapped like quick handclaps high overhead. Gusts brushed her ears with shifting pitch, then slapped her jacket and made the grass hiss in overlapping waves. A week earlier, torrential rain had softened the hill, so each step produced a low squelch beneath the steady hum of wind. Zara kept a mindful grip, letting the handle roll just enough for the kite to climb; every extra metre lifted the diamond clear of an undulating bank of cloud that drummed past like low drums.
The last loop slipped off the drum, and the reel spat a brief squeal as the knot inside jammed under sudden pull. Tension flicked along the string with a sharp twang, fixing the height of the kite—goal A achieved—but the empty drum now spun uselessly, its groan warning that no spare slack protected the weakened knot—element B endangered. Zara planted one boot, leaned her weight backward, and pinched the string; the pitch dropped from bright whistle to muted buzz as she worked the jam loose. Releasing even a finger’s width eased the grip on the thin fibres, yet the kite dipped, fabric drumming like a flag losing wind. She drew in a measured arm’s length, lowering the frame to a steadier band of air. The tradeoff left the kite flying lower than before, yet the knot breathed again instead of fraying apart.
Ian, seated on a blanket nearby, turned a page; the energy-efficient lamp clipped to his book clicked softly, then blended back into the overall hush. Below the hill, windfall apples clinked together under distant branches, their faint knocks carried upward between lulls. Zara listened for any new strain; only a calm thrumming reached her palms. A tiny gorse petal twirled onto the slack line and lodged beside her thumb, glimmering like an unplanned badge.
