The sand ramp around the square mould stopped at the second corner, the other edges still bare. A row of claw prints crossed the unfinished side, cutting a shallow groove through sun-warmed grains. Luna balanced on her knees; the rubber mat rose against her shoes while her wrists shifted with each scoop. The soft bucket rim bowed, and crumbs slid back into the moat. She had pressed one damp lump against the wall, and the darker patch clung like ivy to the pale surface. The wooden rim had been rubbed smooth by countless shovels, offering little friction when her elbow brushed it. She rolled her shoulders, trying to negotiate the angle of her trowel, yet the dry edge kept crumbling.

A sudden metallic ring from the water fountain ended her rhythm; her younger brother Ben called out that the push-button had stuck and the thin stream sprayed everywhere. Luna rose, thighs prickling from the stretch, and paced across the rubber ground, chains of the swing set clanking overhead like coins in an old arcade. She pressed the stiff button once; the water stopped, and a wren burst from the hedge beside the fence, its wings brushing her sleeve before it vanished into tangled ivy. The tiny bird explained the track she had noticed earlier. By the time she walked back, low sunlight had slid across the sandbox. The half wall now sagged under fresh weight; seeped moisture from the hidden drainage pipe had turned the nearby sand dense and dark. The earlier prints had blurred into soft dents.

She crouched again, palms meeting the cooler, heavier layer. The new texture resisted at first, then yielded with a muffled crunch. With the damp layer, each squeeze formed a compact block; if the moisture remained, the walls would hold long enough for her next tower. She exchanged the light bucket for the small sieve, letting heavy clumps fall in slow rain that sealed every gap. A ravenous line of ants explored the crumbs yet skirted the ramp rising beside them. She had hoped the wall could stand, and the unexpected dampness offered that chance. After one final pat she stepped back, and a thin ribbon of sand kept sliding down the outer face, glittering where late sunlight skimmed the grains.
