English 原文
The tape ripped with a crisp hiss as Pia tore a strip to fasten the first mirror upright. A ground-level thud followed when the mirror’s rounded back met a paperback propped on the side table. Her aim: guide the afternoon beam across the room until it struck the white card on the far wall. The cover of the paperback, printed with tiny cottages under bright roofs, grew warm where the sunlight touched. Dust motes sparkled inside the beam, a sprinkle of bright flecks drifting in slow spirals. Pia patiently stacked three thick books in a loose hierarchy of heights on the side table. She turned the top one slightly until the reflected spot leapt to a chair back halfway across the carpet. The spot was lively, almost kinetic, yet it still hovered a hand-span below the waiting card.
Kneeling on the adjustment zone, she slid a plastic wedge beneath the chair-back mirror and watched the spot climb. It brushed the card’s lower edge but faded, weakened by scratches that scattered light at every bounce. She crossed to the supply box near the door, careful not to block the beam. The third mirror felt cool in her palm, and its smooth surface briefly blurred her fingerprint. Carrying it back felt like walking through an invisible maze; one careless angle would erase everything. She carefully leaned the new mirror against a narrow box beside the chair back frame. The light followed a natural progression—window, table, chair, box—and burst into a neat square at the card’s centre. A low hum from the curtains marked success; the adult by the window kept the slit steady, eyes still on a newspaper.
The success lasted only a few seconds before heat loosened the glossy paperback standing under the first mirror. The book slid a finger’s width, and the mirror tilted forward, sending its plastic edge against a loose wedge. The wedge darted across the tabletop, struck the supply box, and dislodged a spare mirror lying flat on the carpet. That round sheet of shiny plastic rolled in widening arcs, each turn slower than the one before. Pia stretched her foot sideways, heel pressing into the weave, and stopped the mirror a breath from the skirting. The beam now grazed the wall beside the card, its pale rectangle crawling upward toward the silent fan brackets.
