English 原文
The main puddle lay smooth as glass, but the mud beside it twitched at every drop from the branch above. Reese balanced on a dry flagstone and eyed a raised patch farther on; reaching that small island would keep his boots clean while the puddle still showed a perfect upside-down landscape of clouds and copper leaves. He decided to lay stepping supports across the water. A broken vegetable crate from the market leaned nearby; inside, three flat boards and a round zucchini floated in brown rainwater. He pulled one board free and slid it onto the surface. It drifted toward the middle, leaving a gap too wide to cross. Reese had prepared for wet hands, yet he still needed two more solid platforms before the mirrored floor slipped away.
He reached again, found a second plank beneath the crate, and nudged it beside the first. The added length brought the route almost close enough, but not quite. As he eased the zucchini onto the outer edge as a floating step, its generous splash startled a sparrow drinking at the drip zone. The bird sprang upward; wings brushed the branch overhead, shaking a small shower of stored drops. The sudden patter struck the mud margin, where a pink worm had inched forward. Splashed and disturbed, the worm recoiled, pushing a pebble into the water; ripples raced toward the planks and rocked the narrow bridge. Reese pressed both palms onto the boards, holding them flat until the rings thinned to faint shimmers.
One piece was still missing. He scanned the leaf mosaic and spotted a discarded bakery tray, its metal rim reflecting amber light; the baker from the morning market had likely forgotten it when rain began. The tray was wide yet light, exactly the final span he needed. He slid it across the boards, and the moment its edge overlapped the dry island, the whole line stiffened into place. The improvised path now reached shore in a single, quiet stretch. Reese stepped over, boots landing on warm stone. Behind him, tiny rings kept drifting outward from the pebble’s entry point. The smell of warm, damp soil held beside the stones, drifting slowly upward.
