English 原文
"See that squirrel on the rail," Cruz whispered.
Faye halted on the stairwell landing where a shaft of light sliced the tiles into bright strips. The creature crouched beside the metal hand-rail; glare behind it carved a neat silhouette of fur and whiskers. Between its paws, something round caught the same shine, and Cruz mistook the smooth gleam for a marble. The supply closet waited three steps away, its sliding door half lost in pooled darkness under a flickering tube. A weathered aluminum grip jutted from the panel, and Cruz wrapped two fingers around it for a quick tug. The door moved barely the width of a notebook before the rail jammed with a dull scrape. If the bell had already rung, the corridor would have filled with echoing feet, yet only the squirrel’s claws scratched nearby.
Cruz kept hold of the weathered grip and shifted his stance, lifting while Faye steadied the panel from below. The rail had been greased years ago, yet dust turned film to grit, and the door shivered before sliding a breadth wider. In that brightness he gained insight: the creature’s shiny prize showed gentle curves instead of marble edges. He leaned toward the window where sharper glare fell, and fine rings appeared on the object between the tiny paws. The supposed stone turned out to be a smooth acorn resting in brown fur light. A slow breath escaped as Cruz tried to grasp the essence of the animal’s quiet labor. With a softer pull he guided the panel farther instead of forcing it again earlier.
Somewhere down the corridor the warning bell rang, and lockers glimmered as students began to flow past the far doorway. Faye glanced back toward class, then nudged a sunlit scrap of paper toward Cruz as an unspoken reminder that time kept moving. He set the acorn on the broad sill, and the thin shadow of its shell stayed across his knuckles.
