English 原文

The lacquered wooden shaft of the practice javelin felt slick against Cal’s palms. Overhead fluorescent tubes cast a harsh glare that bounced off the polished corridor floor, stretching his shadow toward the lockers. He lifted the spear toward the horizontal rack fixed above the trophy case, but the tip struck the frame, rang once, and skidded away. The shaft had twisted from his grip, and the butt clattered on waxed tiles. A few late students hopped aside. If he had lifted the front end first, the spear might have slotted home. Instead, the javelin lay crosswise, obstructing the passage while the fading bell echo threaded the bright hallway.

Footsteps from an arriving class rose into a small tempest of sound, so Cal nudged the fallen spear against the wall with his shoe and walked toward the supply closet. Inside, dim shadows quivered under a flickering tube; paper reams reflected stray glare like stacked mirrors. The sliding door resisted, yet opened just wide enough. A garnet-capped marker bin needed restocking, so he shifted it forward and counted the pens. Beneath the shelf, a laminated replica of an old peace treaty had been wedged behind cardboard rolls; he eased the sheet free, careful not to crease its corners. Dust drifted through the narrow beam and sparkled. Near the doorway, Lily replaced whiteboard erasers; a bead on her bracelet flashed, fascination frozen in midair before the light blinked again. The next bell chimed, scattering students back toward their rooms.

Cal stepped into the corridor just as the javelin, bumped by an unseen backpack, rolled to block the photocopier alcove. A folding step stool leaned nearby where a custodian had serviced ceiling vents. Cal unfolded the stool, climbed one tread, and balanced the spear along his forearm. From the raised perch the rack aligned with his eyes; he guided the butt over the bar and let the tip slide until metal received the weight without a scrape. The rack that had shown an empty slot earlier now held every javelin, its slender silhouette cutting a darker stripe through the fluorescent glow.
