English 原文
A lone strip of tape dangled from the ceiling corner, marking the spot where a balloon cluster was missing. Niall glanced up, then stepped back to the pump table while an adult, Rosa, cut string lengths with quiet scissor snips. On a side plate near the kitchen doorway, soft dinner rolls lay ready for guests to break bread after candles were lit. He slipped an orange balloon over the nozzle; the plunger dropped with a wheezy metallic note that echoed between streamers. After five strokes the neck squeaked under his fingers, yet the shape still drooped like dough before rising. He added three more pumps, chasing the usual rhythm, but an abrupt hiss released half the air in one whoosh. The limp latex slid off, fluttering across the floor with a rubbery thump before drifting toward the floor gathering zone.
A hollow clang sounded when the plunger returned, bringing to light a weakening seal inside the silver cylinder. Each new downstroke carried a thinner whistle, and the delivered air seemed to diminish a fraction with every breathy rise. If he had kept rushing each movement, the tired gasket would have allowed even more air to drift away. He changed pace, pausing a heartbeat after every hiss, so the seal could seat before the next weighted push. The balloon swelled steadily, its neck squealing once before he twisted and tied it, catching the last puff inside. He repeated the slower rhythm for four more colours, letting the measured strokes diminish the impact of the leaking seal.
Balancing the squeaking cluster against his elbow, Niall climbed the low stool, and the balloons brushed the ceiling with soft drumming knocks. Tape pressed to ribbon with a muted pat; the dangling corner brightened as new latex surfaces shimmered under fluorescent hum. A sudden pop from the floor zone announced the fate of an earlier overfilled balloon, yet no streamer strip fell this time. Back at the table, silver paint along the pump barrel now carried tiny scratches where his rings had rubbed through repeated strokes. Dusty fingerprints spotted the varnished tabletop around those scratches, faint but clear enough to remember the morning’s hurried decoration.
