English 原文
Iron-rich mud filled the morning air, and Finn pressed his bare foot onto the narrow bank beside the wooden sluice gate. His older brother Otto crouched a few steps away, smoothing mud around a leaning seedling row. Finn’s goal was clear: drop the water in his corner paddy until two finger-widths of each green blade stood above the surface; right now, only one. He tugged at the plank that controlled the inflow; the board had been swollen by the dawn seepage and resisted, yet after a steady pull it rose a finger’s breadth. A thin sheet of water slid into the drainage channel, and the surface inside the paddy sank the same small distance. One centimetre lost, one still to go.
The escape of water reached the far paddy first. Through the cracked bank, a swirl pushed back, raising rings near Otto’s shoes. That shift showed how the ecosystem of connected pools answered every change. Finn made a quick deduction: one small lift was not sustainable, as seepage would soon refill the corner. He gripped the plank again and eased it up another finger. Water streamed faster, nudging tadpoles downstream and clouding the mirror with drifting silt. The stronger flow undercut the mud at the gate’s base, opening a slender leak that thinned the narrow path. If he tilted the board too far, the rush would bow the nearest seedlings. With only moments before the bank melted further, Finn pulled straw from the dry edge, twisted a rope, and wedged it between board and groove. The straw slowed the stream and held the level at the second-finger mark — the threshold.
Otto straightened, water beads rolling from his knees onto the cracked path. The brothers watched the adjusted gate in silence. A faint drip echoed off the wooden frame, keeping a silver chain of droplets falling into the drainage groove; that movement would vent extra warmth later and keep the microclimate round the seedlings steady. The clear outcome showed itself in rows that now stood upright, each tip casting a long, steel-grey reflection instead of dipping below. Otto lifted the empty straw bundle and headed for the tool post. Behind him, that silver chain of droplets continued breaking the surface, sending small ripples outward toward the far paddy.
