The scuffed landing zone lay quiet, but a silver-flecked lemur clung to the steel fulcrum. Its striped tail draped across the cool pivot, the rings alternating frost-white and charcoal quietly. Tamsin hovered on the high end of the plank, boots dangling above blue-grey rubber surface. Erik sat lower, soles pressed flat into pale sand that had drifted across the safety surface. A faint whistle from the swing chains drifted over, mixing with the crisp squeak of the pivot. Sunlight drew a bright rectangle on Erik’s handle, leaving Tamsin’s side in shadow while a breeze lifted fine hairs on her forearms. Beneath them the fulcrum pin showed a darker smear of old grease along its silver skin. The wood beside each handle shone where countless palms had gradually polished the frost-pale grain smooth. The plank had been painted sky-blue once, yet that colour survived only inside the narrow grooves beside each handle. The lemur blinked once, then shuffled closer to Tamsin, setting the plank trembling like a slow drum.

Tamsin had hoped the seesaw could hover level for a moment, so she slid forward until her shins pressed the silver-warm plank. The tilt eased for a breath, yet Erik still skimmed the ground with the rubber bumper compressed. He dug deep with his heels, pushing against the scuffed earth to lift himself. But the worn fulcrum leaned slightly toward him, and the plank dipped back again suddenly. Between them, a folded strip of rug that Erik had placed as a cushion peeked from under his coat. Its extra weight, small yet steady, tipped the balance further toward his already lower side. Erik pulled the rug free, and the sudden loss of mass sent Tamsin’s end rushing downward. She gripped the chrome handle, sleeves wrapped between skin and heat, while the board bounced once on the tired bumper. The lemur startled, then scampered along the plank and settled above the midpoint quietly. Its light body turned out to be just enough to counter the missing rug entirely. They exchanged a quick grin and held still; for two breaths the board hovered almost level. Tamsin slid off first and walked toward the bench where a water bottle waited nearby. As she walked away, a lone daffodil petal slid over the blue-grey rubber and halted beneath the fulcrum, unseen.
