A crisp ring from the reception phone pierced the steady dryer hum, and Petra looked up from the waiting seats. Next to the phone, a transparent jar of sweets glimmered under amber bulbs, its glass catching every warm spark of light. A striped salon cat paced along the counter, tail flicking with brisk precision as it sniffed the bright wrappers inside the jar. Petra’s own chair remained occupied; the stylist’s foot pumped the pedal and mirrors multiplied the rise. She wanted the curious cat to stay a safe distance from the fragile glass and bright sugar. She slid one thick magazine from the rack and stood it upright as a barrier. If the jar tipped, broken glass would scatter across the floor, so she stayed alert.

A moment later a waiter in a white apron hurried past the window outside, catching the cat’s eye. The animal leapt higher, landing its front paws on the slim ledge and nudging the magazine aside. A second, glossier issue had been slipped between the first and the glass jar earlier. Petra now pressed it harder against the barrier, then wedged a folded style brochure on top to raise the wall even more. Each layer made the stack taller but also narrower, and fine hair clippings on the counter acted like tiny rollers. When the cat pushed again, the whole pile tilted toward the mirror behind the counter. A gap opened to reveal the mirror, and the jar of sweets slid, gained momentum, then rolled toward the spray bottles. The moving jar struck a bottle, which toppled and knocked an open comb tray, sending silver combs rattling toward the basin walkway.

With both hands steady, Petra pinched the glossy middle magazine free from the shaky tower. The sudden subtraction lowered the tower, and the two remaining layers dropped flat against the counter. The flatter base stalled the jar’s travel, so it slowed, tapped once against the makeshift wall, and stopped before the edge. A ribbon of conditioner scent drifted past as the cat hopped down and wandered behind the waiting chairs. The stylists kept trimming, their scissors flashing under amber bulbs, unaware of the brief chain reaction. Outside, the brisk waiter disappeared around the corner with his tray, leaving only faint street sounds. One comb, dislodged earlier, kept rocking back and forth on the tile beside the basin.

片刻後，窗外一名身穿白圍裙的服務生匆匆走過，吸引了貓的目光。貓躍得更高，前爪踩上細窄檯面，把雜誌推開。早先已有人把第二本更亮滑的雜誌塞在第一本與玻璃罐之間，佩特拉此刻用力把它壓得更緊，接著又將一張摺好的造型摺頁夾在最上方，讓「牆」再長高。每加一層，塔變得更高也更窄，檯面上的細髮屑像微型滾輪。當貓再度推撞，整疊雜誌向鏡子方向傾斜；縫隙張開，露出鏡面的一線反光，糖果罐開始滑動，加速滾向噴霧瓶。移動的罐子撞到瓶子，瓶子倒下又碰翻放開的梳盤，銀色梳子一路響著滑向洗髮區走道。

佩特拉雙手穩住，捏住那本光滑的中間雜誌，迅速抽走。突然少了一層，塔身降低，其餘兩層啪地平躺在檯面。較平的底座擋住罐子的路徑，它放慢速度，輕觸臨時小牆後停在邊緣內側。護髮乳的香氣飄過，貓跳下櫃檯，漫步到等候椅後方。造型師們的剪刀在暖黃燈下閃動，對這短暫連鎖反應毫無察覺。外頭那位步伐輕快的服務生拐過街角，只剩微弱街聲滲入。早先被撞出的其中一把梳子在洗髮區旁的磁磚上，仍前後晃動不已。
