Dawn’s brief cloudburst had left mortar still darker than the faces, and chalk dust clung where no colour lay. He lifted a foam roller and pressed, yet the porous wall drank the thin coat unevenly. Where the roller passed, a speckled sheen appeared; below, yesterday’s brush line stayed smooth and dim. If he pressed even harder, the edge sprawled beyond the chalk boundary. Frugality with paint mattered to the organisers, yet uncontrolled drips still threatened every shoe nearby. A terrier curled near the paint tarp uttered a sleepy grunt when droplets tapped the plastic.

Heat shimmered along the upper bricks, but the shade at ground level made colours tricky to judge. Kane left his square and crossed the bright strip of tarp, toes warming through thin soles. The green bucket had been stirred by Ben earlier; a dry film floated like tiny leaves. Kane fetched a mesh scrap beside the ladder station and strained the paint. Flakes clung to the screen instead of dropping into the tray below. Beyond the wall, families drifted down the canal promenade, stopping occasionally to interact with painters through silent thumbs-up gestures. Yara, working one section higher, glanced down and asked, “Which green are you on today?” He simply lifted the bucket so she could compare the tone easily. After rinsing the mesh at the spigot, he walked the twenty paces to the reference easel. Bright sunlight bounced off the laminated sheet on the easel stand, forcing him to squint. A passing cloud muted the glare long enough for him to trace the boundary in the air before heading back.

The roller lay where he had dropped it, but the terrier had nudged its handle into the fresh tray. A thin sunrise of paint now haloed the foam, catching light along its curved edge. Kane crouched; the shadow-line had slipped lower, leaving his half-done band in direct glare. Without thinking, he angled the roller lightly and moved faster, letting the extra sheen level itself before the wall could drink it. The stipples quickly vanished into the older brushwork, the boundary meanwhile staying crisp. He stepped aside, and bright light slid across the now-unified stripe in a single clean sweep. At the same hour, two gulls skimmed low above the canal promenade, their wings cutting harsh glare. Their reflected silhouettes glided over the wet paint still shimmering on Yara’s ladder rung.
