Palmer retrieved the damp plane from the retrieval zone. Moisture had loosened a fold across the grain; a thin shadow ran along the soft ridge. When he opened the wing, it sagged like wet cloth. The paper’s fibres had been compromised, so he chose the next sheet and folded again, pressing each crease along the grain this time. Ian clipped a small paper clip on the nose to gain distance, sacrificing a breath of lift. They climbed to the launch hilltop. The wind-reading ribbon flickered east, then north, unwilling to stay still. Palmer waited until the flutter eased, raised the plane high, and released. The extra weight pulled the nose down at first, then a rising gust slid under the flat body, pushing it forward. The glide straightened, skimmed above the circle, and fell, the right wing dipping. The clip’s extra pull steadied the descent, and the tip touched the chalk ring instead of drifting wide.

Momentum carried the plane across the ring until the softened grass on the far edge grabbed the nose and halted its slide, ending the tiny chain of wind-led events. Palmer jogged down and lifted it; the wings kept their angle this time. Ants explored a crumb-filled burrow beside the flat stone, a small habitat untouched by the morning contest. He walked back to the bench, aligned the surviving blank sheet under the ruler, and decided the session had shown enough. He set the ruler on the bench, and its metal edge quivered under a narrow band of reflected glare.
