English 原文
The varnished rail beside the map kiosk looked bright, yet a faint tackiness clung to Jarvis’s fingertips as if the wood had just been painted. His shoulders leaned forward, knees braced against the paving, while he eyed the coin-operated binoculars that faced the snow-leopard enclosure. A cardboard sign on the metal post named the price: three twenty-cent pieces. The clink of one lonely coin inside his palm told him the gap. He had already checked every pocket on his cargo shorts. Hoping for another scrap of change, he unzipped his backpack. A toy teapot, bought earlier at the gift stand, rolled against his wrist; its lid rattled, and one extra coin slipped out and tapped his shoe. Two down, the threshold still out of reach.
Jarvis shifted toward a bench where Alma sat reading, a homemade cushion cover under her. The fabric’s thoughtful pattern of fern leaves folded as she leaned sideways, and a silver edge winked between the wooden slats. The coin lay too deep for his fingers. He scanned the path, spotted a discarded wooden ice-cream stick, and bent to pick it up; gravel pressed through his trainers, tightening the arches of his feet. A sudden breeze made the striped awning sway, and a roaming peacock strutted past, its claws clicking on stone. Jarvis crouched, slid the stick into the gap, and nudged the coin. It wobbled, then rolled free across the paving into his palm; the combined weight of three coins finally met the demand.
With calves tense, he climbed the short step to the viewing deck. A storage cupboard beside the information board stood partly open, its hinges creaking as wind pushed against the door. He ignored it, dropped each coin into the slot, and swung the binoculars downward. The heavy barrel resisted, then loosened, allowing a clear circle of glass to frame the hillside. No snow leopard appeared; instead, swaying bamboo filled the view while the peacock’s feathers drifted at the edge of the lens. Three damp fingerprints marked the steel ledge beneath the eyepiece.
