English 原文
Plip, plip—the hose nozzle near the bucket station kept dripping onto the packed soil, each drop making a small dark bloom. Alma planted her boots beside the tallest bucket while Cruz knelt nearby, pressing yellow petals into his metal pan. She drove a long wooden spoon hard against the crust that had formed overnight there. The surface resisted, flexing under her weight yet refusing to break, and even the spoon shivered. A groove of older scratches crossed the lid-like layer, speaking of determination left by yesterday’s stirring. Her arms already grew weary; muscles quivered down to her elbows while the spoon’s handle vibrated against her palms. She shifted her stance, letting her hip lean forward for extra leverage against the stubborn crust. The nearby pot's rim, ringed with a dull band of lead hammered on long ago, rattled when the spoon slipped. Sunlight radiated across the work plank, warming the grey wood and flashing off small wet spots. Beneath Alma’s pressure the crust finally cracked, yet only narrow fissures opened, and the thick clay still clung together with tenacity.
Alma dipped the spoon through a fissure and drizzled a thin thread of hose water, careful to add just enough weight. If the liquid overflowed, the plank would turn slick and tools might slide, so she kept the flow slow. The added water seeped downward, loosening a wedge of clay, yet a rivulet escaped over the lip and rolled off the plank. Gravity drew the stream across a groove in the dirt, then under the drying shelf where yesterday’s round mud cake waited. The cake shifted, tilted, and began to glide toward the slanted corner of the rack slowly. Alma’s knee brushed the ground as she lunged and nudged a smooth pebble into the groove. The pebble wedged itself like a tiny dam; the water pooled, and the cake stopped inches from the drop. Alma wiped her forearms against her muddy trousers, feeling the fabric pull at drying streaks. A moment later the trapped water washed mud off the pebble, and bright quartz twinkled while droplets spiralled past its gleaming edges.
