English 原文
A steady tick of tweezers against glass showed Fraser already positioning a moss patch at the jar mouth when Hope approached the desk. Nina, the visiting botanist, turned a page nearby; the paper gave a dry rustle that mixed with the faint hiss of Hope’s spray bottle. She misted once, and the droplets tapped the soil like tiny drums, yet a cool breeze slipped through the half-open window and chilled the jar. A thin skin of condensation had been drawn across the inside, turning the smooth surface slippery and hiding the neat layers she had arranged earlier.
Hope aimed to lower a smooth pebble, its dark allure shining under the shifting light, but the fog blocked every guide mark. She tilted the jar slightly to encourage a clearer view; gravel crackled, the pebble rolled, and it bumped a fern stem. The stem brushed a moss clump, and loose soil tapped the charcoal below, sounding like soft rain in a tunnel. Each hop grew quieter, an attenuated chain that paused when the pebble lodged against a low ridge of gravel. Fraser’s iris-coloured sleeve brushed the glass, adding a brief whisper, yet he stayed focused on his own patch.
The mist still hid the target spot, so Hope tried again with only a gentler tilt and the tweezers angled lower. The pebble shifted by a few millimetres, bumping the fern once more, but this time the frond bent and cushioned the motion, stopping further slides. She released a slow breath; outside, the breeze eased, and warmth from the window began to clear the glaze. Through a growing oval of clarity, the layers re-appeared, striped like quiet chords on a drum. A single droplet broke loose from the inner wall and drifted downward; its delicate patter echoed inside the glass.
