English 原文
The coarse fibres of the staff doormat pressed through Harriet's thin shoe sole as she stepped behind the glass partition. She aimed to prepare a cup of black tea with tapioca pearls before the pearls cooled. Lifting a ladle, she dipped it through the surface; the first spoonful already met resistance—the pearls on top felt tougher than the springy ones below. Each second of warmth was precious, so she hurried. Steam rolled upward when she set the lid down, fogging the menu board. A house gecko resting on that glass jolted at the cloud and darted across the panel. Its dash caught the eye of the cat curled beside the sealing machine, whose lever glowed like the door of a kiln. The cat sprang, paws skidding over the mat; one paw nudged the straw dispenser, and a straw slid, thumping the cup toward the counter edge.
Harriet’s elbow slid behind her, corralling the cup before it tipped. The cat hovered near the dispenser, tail twitching, as though keeping a truce now that the noise had stopped. Condensation beaded on the straw’s film. She noticed the pearls drifting inside the ladle had already begun to stiffen again. Her training had provided one insight: heat lingers deepest. She plunged the ladle straight down the centre, held it for a count, then lifted a scoop that shone. The oolong dispenser had been lifted earlier by Forrest, leaving beads of water along its rim, yet no one blamed the mess. Harriet poured the pearls, sealed the drink, and held the lever for three seconds until the film tightened. A straw kept rolling along the pickup shelf, tapping lightly against the glass every few centimetres.
At the same moment in the storage room, cardboard sheets fluttered sideways along the cool floor.
