Lark pressed one boot on the near bank’s stepping-stone, fingers brushing the gritty sun-warmed surface, while Vance shifted his weight on the far bank’s flat rock, a cup from the canteen balanced in his palm. Both wanted the single path: Lark aimed to carry a rolled picnic rug to the meadow beyond, and Vance planned to bring fresh water back for a classmate sketching on the trail. Recess still ticked away; a science teacher standing beside the anchor post watched the queue but spoke no word. The bridge breathed under the breeze, hemp rails leaving faint dust on Lark’s knuckles. Sunlight flickered through the finger-wide gaps, the stream’s chatter masking the uneven knocks that reached Vance’s ears.

Lark stepped onto the first plank, and Vance mirrored her from the opposite side, each matching the other’s tempo to keep the sway low. Midway, the rhythm broke. A pale plastic dolphin, lodged sideways between two boards, tipped one plank higher than its neighbour and twisted the rope frame. The sudden tilt jolted their elbows upward; coarse hemp fibres scraped Vance’s forearms while Lark’s boot slid on the damp grain. The loose plank had been lifted by the toy, and the keynote of the bridge’s motion shifted to a sharper wobble. Both paused, eyes meeting above the centre sag. A thin willow branch lay on the mossy handrail. Lark gripped the branch; its bark felt ridged and springy. She crouched, passed the branch through the gap, and Vance guided its tip under the dolphin’s smooth belly.

Together they levered downward; wood complained in a muted groan before the dolphin popped free and plopped into the shallow stream. The culmination of their small dilemma arrived as the plank eased back, and the ropes calmed to a slow pulse. Vance crossed the final boards first, carrying the cup without a spill, then held the handrail so the bridge swayed less for Lark and her rolled rug. When both boots reached stone, a final oscillation rippled along the planks and faded. Narrow scrape lines, the width of the willow bark, streaked the lifted plank’s edge, and pale fibre dust clung to the spot where their hands had worked.
