English 原文
The cedar sample box lay open, but a single sandalwood stick already glowed over the honey-colored tray. Zander aimed to choose one last scent for a gift, while Uma compared ribbon colours near the amber-lit counter. He moved between ochre shelves where jasmine, pine, and citrus boxes formed a mosaic of rust and gold. Rows had been arranged by region earlier that day, and tiny paper dividers kept nearby bundles from touching. After four quick sniffs, every new aroma blended; only a faint tingling at the tip of his nose showed any difference. Assuming the next sample would stand out was wishful thinking; the warm air simply carried the same blurred cloud back to him. To clear his senses for a moment, he gently fanned the warm air with a thick price card. The motion only stirred another swirl from the flamboyant crimson label hanging above the tray.
A thin stream of heat slipped upward, softening the wax that held the label in place. The paper sagged, brushed the edge of a small bulldozer-shaped incense holder displayed beside the tray, and nudged it forward. The bright toy rolled a finger's width along the counter and bumped the ceramic dish. A hairline fracture that had been hidden under ash suddenly spread with a dry pop. Ash drifted out in a grey curtain, coating the nearby cedar sticks and smothering Zander’s sense of contrast even more. He pinched the dish, shifted it onto the cool grey stone counter, and the lower temperature slowed the ember at once. Next, he closed the sandalwood box and broke a lavender stick in two, letting the shorter piece rest further from the ember. The gap allowed two separate columns of smoke to rise calmly above the tray without mingling. Uma tied the chosen ribbon with quiet flair behind him, while Zander was leaning closer, watching the lavender thread climb.
