"The milk jug slides again."

Vance steadied the glass handle, the damp beads cold against his knuckles while spoon handles chimed inside the yew jar. He had planned to drown two generous bowls of gritty cereal in milk before the wall clock reached eight. At first the jug felt heavy, and the pale liquid swayed near the top line of its window. Steam from the kettle drifted across the chrome toaster, giving the counter a hazy film like distant lakeshore mist. A spoon tip touched the jug, and a chain of tiny ripples traced the surface before fading.

While he shook cereal from the box, the counter’s hidden slope coaxed the jug toward the sink end once more. A coarse patch of dried jam caught its base, leaving the vessel angled and pinning a plate stack against the napkin holder. As he lifted the jar free, the remaining milk sloshed low, barely enough to darken the bottom of each bowl. The last pour formed only a thin ribbon, and a quiet nudge from the kettle cord spun the jug completely empty. He paused, eyeing two slices rising inside the toaster, and decided one bowl would do if toast carried the rest.

By the time the toaster released its load, a single cup and spoon had been placed beside the modest bowl. Miles rummaged through the fridge for yoghurt, unaware of the quiet compromise unfolding across the reflective steel-grey counter. The wall clock ticked onward, and a faint ring of moisture circled the emptied jug like a pale badge of morning effort. Steam drifted upward, then thinned toward the ceiling, leaving the glass surface clear enough to show a single breadcrumb sliding downhill. Somewhere behind the kettle, water in the plastic base cooled slowly, giving a dull hiss that faded into the ticking.

凡斯扶住玻璃手柄，冰涼的水珠貼在指節上，湯匙柄在紫杉木罐裡叮噹作響。他原本打算在八點前，替兩大碗帶有粗糙口感的麥片倒滿牛奶。一開始壺子顯得沉甸甸的，白色液面幾乎貼到視窗頂端。熱水壺的蒸氣飄過鍍鉻烤麵包機，為檯面罩上一層彷彿湖岸薄霧的朦朧膜。湯匙尖輕點壺身，一串細小漣漪劃過液面後消散。

當他把麥片倒進碗裡，檯面暗中的斜度再次把壺推向水槽端。一塊粗糙的果醬乾黏住壺底，把它斜卡在紙巾架旁的盤堆上。他把壺拉開時，剩餘的牛奶只在底部掀起低低的晃動，勉強染濕每個碗的底面。最後一道奶流僅成細帶，而水壺電線輕輕一撥，壺子已空。看到烤麵包機裡兩片吐司升起，他決定只保留一碗，讓吐司補足早餐。

烤麵包機彈出麵包時，一只杯子與湯匙已放在那小碗旁。邁爾斯在冰箱裡翻找優格，沒注意到鋼灰色檯面上那份無聲的取捨。時鐘繼續滴答，空壺下纖薄的水痕繞成晨間努力的淡色徽章。蒸氣往上消散到天花板，玻璃面板透亮得足以讓人看到一粒麵包屑沿斜面慢慢滑行。熱水壺後方的水在塑膠底座裡漸漸冷卻，發出低沉的嘶聲，最後融進時鐘的滴答聲。
