Only two green price tags still clung to the front edge of the supply shelf, breaking what had been a tidy line. Above them, blue and yellow tags continued their neat march, creating a striped pattern across the wooden panel. Fraser traced the pattern with his eyes as though following quiet footsteps across a golden floor. A jubilant burst of parakeet calls tumbled from the cages to his left, crossing the warm spill of lamplight. He brushed one fingertip along the counter and felt dry feed crush into finer powder under the light touch. His grandparent chatted with the shopkeeper near the register, so no one hurried him toward the next aisle. The small-animal zone glowed ahead, bedding rising in amber mounds below a low heat lamp.

Inside a glass-front cage, two hamsters burrowed beneath beige shavings that shifted like slow water. One rodent surfaced, revealed only a dusty flank, and disappeared beneath the shavings again quickly. The cream patch remained hidden, so Fraser tore a cabbage strip from the bowl and dropped it beside the tunnel. Shavings rustled, yet the treat vanished underground, and by then the cabbage strip had been shredded to threads. He picked a fallen tulip petal beneath the display stand and laid it on the bedding, hoping the color might stand out. Instead, both hamsters hauled the petal under, piling more shavings until the surface brushed the low cage lid. Seeking clearer contrast, Fraser scooped extra shavings from a bin on the next level and poured them through the hatch. The heap swelled, pressed against the water bottle, and the plastic nozzle trembled in small, jerky hops.

The towering bedding now blocked any chance to see markings, turning his own additions into the obstacle. He remembered the first bright layer and slid two fingers inside, pinching the tulip petal before lifting it free. Air slipped into the space left behind; the pile settled lower and opened a narrow passage that ran like a shallow trench. One hamster rolled through, its caramel fur flashing a clear cream patch across the rounded shoulder. As the animal paused, sniffing the rescued petal in his palm, Fraser spotted a slim green plastic rectangle among the loosened shavings. He hooked the missing price tag with a fingernail and pressed it back onto the cage front beside the other green markers.

過高的鋪料此刻反而遮住一切花紋，自己的增添成了阻礙。他想起第一層亮色，伸進兩指夾住鬱金香花瓣，把它抽出。空隙立刻讓空氣溜進去，堆丘往下塌一些，形成淺淺小道。一隻倉鼠順著通道滾出，焦糖色毛上那塊鮮明奶油斑清楚可見。牠停在他掌心的花瓣前嗅聞時，法瑟瞥見鬆動木屑間一片細長綠色塑膠。他用指甲勾住那片遺失的價籤，重新按回籠門前，排在其他綠籤旁。
