Zinnia pressed each wet stem into floral foam, feeling the block resist, then yield under steady pressure from her palms. The slippery surface forced her grip to tighten, elbows floating outward to keep balance. The bouquet, like a loose pendulum, swayed above the foam with each tiny adjustment. She tied an optimistic yellow ribbon around the middle, but the knot loosened because Unity’s playful spin stole its tension. A coming-of-age row of half-opened buds framed the top edge.

A sudden metallic ring from the entrance bell cut through their rhythm. A gust pushed the outdoor price board into a bucket of tulips. Water sloshed across the mat, so Zinnia darted toward the doorway, knees bent to keep traction on the wet tiles. Unity followed, balancing the heavy board upright until the florist wedged it against the umbrella stand. During those few breaths, the timer-controlled spray nozzle above the wrapping station released its mist; nobody watched the fine droplets settle. They hurried back once the mat lay flat again. The ribbon spool that had been neat against the holder now whirled across the counter, ribbon stretching toward the floor in a bright arc. Zinnia’s cognition tracked the silk line to the scissors swinging on their chain at the counter’s edge.

With each spin, the ribbon tugged the chain, and the swinging scissors nudged a crumbly corner of floral foam forward. The foam block slid a finger-length and bumped a narrow vase. The vase tilted, its glass lip scraping against the board. Unity’s arm shot out; their fingertips pinched the racing ribbon, and tension drained from the loose band like air from a balloon. The spool lost speed. The damp tissue Zinnia had left beneath the bouquet tore along an invisible wet crease and released stray petals onto the tape dispenser. She layered a fresh sheet, folded its drier edge twice, and pressed the bouquet firmly so the stems imprinted a shallow groove. The stems had been trimmed earlier by the florist, leaving flat ends that held the new fold in shape. Beside Zinnia’s boots, the ribbon wheel spun gently toward the stand’s metal leg.
