Hidden Ground Under Wet Moss-

English 原文
Crushed pine needles released a sharp resin scent that bit through the wet breeze. A small hedgehog, its silver spines arranged like tiny roof tiles, snuffled beside the moss-coated trunk lying across the trail. Blue-grey light slipped through the fresh gap in the canopy, glinting on puddles that occupied boot prints in front of Atlas. Behind him, Miles poked at the upright root plate, loose soil pattering down around his shoes. Plant life crowded every edge—ferns unfurled, and pale lichens drew chalky rings on the bark—turning the place into a textured chart of greens and frost-white spots. Atlas pressed a thumb into the moss; the cushion yielded, then rose again, a strangely pleasurable experience. He eased one boot onto the log top where rainwater shimmered on the green carpet, its surface wearing a wistful sheen as if missing sunlight.
Halfway across, the hedgehog shuffled nearer, nose tracing the narrow, drier line at the trunk’s base, and Atlas adjusted his stance. A brittle crack sounded to his left; Miles’ stick collection slid from a branch debris pile and splashed into a puddle. Atlas hopped down to help, leaving the log behind. They rescued the sticks, and the brief chore took only a minute, yet the drizzle thickened during that pause. The upper bark had been peeled by earlier hikers, leaving patches of steel-grey wood. When Atlas turned back, the moss on the log looked darker and slicker; tiny rivulets slipped over the round back like threads of glass. The hedgehog now stood farther along the ground strip, unbothered by the muddier trail, its small body pressed against the supportive wall of tangled roots as if using them for cover.
Atlas studied the pattern. Where the animal walked, the soil held its shape instead of oozing; he rubbed the spot with his palm and found firm earth beneath a thin veneer of leaves. The creature had traced a hidden path—what he first saw as a blockage had quietly become a guide. The rain kept falling; soon the moss might turn into a mirror. He chose a new method: rather than climbing the slippery crown, he would follow the stable ribbon beside the trunk. He slid a flat stone from the debris zone to widen the first step. He tucked his lovable companion, a soft toy bear dangling from his pack, so it would not swing and tightened the straps. Rain kept shining silver across the log top while pale droplets gathered on his lashes. Atlas was lifting his boot toward the firmer strip beside the hedgehog.
