English 原文
Two faint brown marks had appeared on the steel-grey pan before Ruby lifted the ceramic jug again. Her goal stayed simple: finish twenty translucent crêpes so the layered cake could reach the planned height. Each pour felt like a miniature adventure across the dark circle, and the hiss lasted exactly one second as always. After the eighth pour, however, the pan handle glowed blue-grey and warmth crept through, forcing her fingers to hover. A quick compromise came: she wrapped a resilient kitchen towel around the handle and tried to tilt the batter. The thick cloth slowed the swirl, and a heavy centre formed before the film set, leaving a pale bulge.
She placed the imperfect disc on the cooling rack, which had already bent slightly under five earlier layers. That bend pushed another crêpe toward the edge, tearing its rim when it brushed the wire frame. While Ruby slid the torn piece aside, the towel slipped, and the hot handle singed a faint smoke line across the cloth. The rising heat, once an obvious nuisance, now timed itself like a hidden metronome on the counter. She waited until the handle cooled from silver-hot to barely warm, then poured, spun, and set the pan in one fluid rhythm. The next three crêpes emerged evenly speckled; the handle had become a quiet mediator between flame and batter.
With timing finally steady, Ruby transferred each new disc to the chilled marble slab with deliberate care. There, the cool cream acted as a catalyst for change, gripping the still-warm crêpe before it could sag. Layer by layer the cake rose, silver light from the ceiling catching the faint equatorial bulge forming at centre height. A faint puff of steam escaped through the side gap, drifted upward, and vanished among blue-white shadows. Beside the burner, the singed towel remained folded, and a narrow smoke-grey streak ran across its middle.
