The sudden release jerked her wrist outward; her tall water glass wobbled, ice cracking against its rim before tipping and spilling a thin sheet across the laminate. Water trickled toward the bird, and the sparrow fluttered back, wings brushing the hanging glasses with a muted thrum.

Joy righted the glass, slid a coaster beneath its damp base, and swept the loosened cap only halfway back onto the bottle. She then pinched two grains between her fingers and set them on a dry patch of wood, a safe span from the spreading puddle. The sparrow hopped forward, pecked once, and stayed, now clearly interested in food rather than shelter — a detail Joy had not noticed before the spill. She kept one hand near the coaster in case the glass shifted again and listened to the distant printer chatter at the cashier end while droplets fell into the drip tray with soft ticks. A server passing by paused, lifted a towel from her apron, and dabbed the remaining water into the cloth before carrying the damp fabric toward the kitchen doorway.
