Finn pushed against the scuffed landing zone, and the high end of the seesaw drifted downward toward him while Zara’s feet swung into the warm air. A burnt-rubber smell rose from the bumper beneath Finn, mixing with the oily scent of grease that clung to the fulcrum. Their different weights showed at once: Zara hovered, ankles loose; Finn stayed near the earth where dust tasted dry on each breath. He shuffled backward along the plank, the wood’s grain rough and slightly sweet where sun had baked sap to the surface. The shift improved the balance for a moment, yet the fulcrum squeaked, and the thin metallic tang vibrated through the handle. Zara inched farther out, but sand on her seat produced a gritty slide, sending her end too low and leaving Finn dangling again.

The hot handle on Zara’s side gained heat as the shadow moved, releasing a sharp iron smell that stung her palms. She pulled her backpack forward as a shield, and its zip opened just enough for a folded geologist’s report to slip partly free, smelling of dusty libraries and old ink. Inside the same pocket rested a small glass jar holding cooled lava chips her aunt, a geologist, had given her; the stones carried a faint cold-ash odor. Zara hooked the jar over the metal tube like an extra weight. The added mass carried a different quality of force: Finn’s end rose, then hovered almost level. A surprised laugh puffed from them both, carrying a hint of playground saltiness as if they could taste victory. The plank floated for three long breaths before the jar swung, knocking the report loose. Paper fluttered away, and Zara lunged after it, brushing the glass aside. Her sudden reach tipped the lever again; Finn’s sneakers met ground with a dull, rubbery thud, and the seesaw leaned back to its earlier tilt.

Neither child noticed the smallest lava fragment that had slipped through the jar’s loose lid; it rolled off the plank and came to a quiet stop beside the grease-dark fulcrum pin.
