English 原文
A striped scarf, a dented thermos, and a yellow rubber ball lay on the stone border just outside the shallow ice patch. Hector drew his boots onto the cloudy surface, while Fern waited beside a brown terrier whose breath puffed in quick bursts. The puddle, a backwater of last night’s rain, felt glass-hard under Hector’s soles yet grainy where wind-blown sand had scattered. Their simple plan held two parts: flatten the frozen leaf that snagged every slide and then send the ball cleanly across to the far bank for the dog to chase once it stopped. The leaf had been locked in place by concentric air rings, but Hector stamped gently near it; the thin ridge crumbled, and a sheet of ice flaked away, leaving a smoother lane through the centre.
Hector’s victory was short. Fern stepped forward, and the new lane reflected light like polished tin; however, the edge ice beside it groaned. The weight shift from Hector’s stamping had been transferred outward, and a faint crack zigzagged toward the rim. When Fern moved, her right boot punched through the softened margin, plunging into ankle-deep meltwater. Cold crept through the wool as she yanked the foot free, droplets ticking down the gritty stone. Now their two aims clashed: smooth passage at the centre versus secure footing near the edge. Wordless reciprocity took shape; Hector slid back, offering space while Fern balanced on the pavement to wring her damp sock. Nearby piles of sand from ongoing restoration of the flowerbeds spilled grains onto his soles. Beyond the temporary fence, patches of greenery pushed through frost, early signs of regeneration after winter. Using only his heel, Hector brushed a narrow ribbon of that loose sand across the cracked border, giving it rough grip yet keeping the centre untarnished.
When Fern returned, she chose a shorter launch point inside the sanded strip. Her knees bent, weight low, and she released the ball with a low push. It skimmed over the newly cleared lane, slowed before the far rim, and stopped safe from the thinning film. The dog scrambled after it, nails rasping on stone, then trotted back, tail flicking cold droplets. The ice held; still, the crack glimmered white beneath a sheen of meltwater, and the sand band dulled the surface in a blunt arc near the border.
