The shallow wooden tray beside the pottery stall showed only pale sawdust where bright clay beads had once rolled. Sam bent closer, his fingertips brushing the soft dust as he looked for a single leftover sphere. He had promised his grandparent a bracelet made from these colors, and the beads had been shaped by hand and fired the night before. Smooth bowls on the upper shelf formed equitable rows, their glazed rims cool against his knuckles when he straightened. Behind the counter, the vendor lifted a painted bowl with a small flourish before wrapping it for another customer. Sam aimed to load six beads into a small linen pouch; the stall’s price hung on that number. A faint rattle beneath a sheet of crumpled bubble-wrap caught his ear. He lifted the plastic, and two speckled beads slipped free, gritty on his palm. They weighed almost nothing, but he eased them into the pouch anyway and felt the cloth sag a little. The first gain came, yet four spaces remained inside the loose weave.

A delivery cart then edged along the lane, its axle rumbling over gravel. The potter pushed his display inward, blocking the corner where Sam searched. Forced to stand up for a clearer view, Sam stepped onto the stone bench that edged the stall. From the higher angle he caught sight of another bead wedged between wooden slats. His pocket held narrow tweezers meant for model planes; he pinched the bead free, cool and slightly sticky with clay dust. If the pouch had stayed slack, he would have missed the next bead entirely. Three collected, still short. Moisture drifting from warming awnings made the sawdust clump, and that insight told him heavier beads might lie where the powder gathered. Kneeling again, he sifted the damp patch; three larger beads emerged, their surfaces rough like dry orange peel. The pouch drew them in, and at once the linen stretched tight, a quiet proof that six now filled the space. Sam walked back to the tray that had been empty; three spare beads now lined its dusty centre.
