English 原文
The windlass handle had already turned through two slow circles when Theo checked the waterline against the bright algae stripe halfway down the grey-brown wall. Water curled into the lock chamber, pushing a loop of amber foam ahead like the vanguard of a small parade. A mallard, reliable herbivore of the canal, bobbed beside the boat and snapped at drifting weed while the rope creaked on the bollard. Behind Theo, the lock-keeper, his quiet mentor, folded his arms and watched, silent. Theo cranked again, but the rod shuddered; the left paddle stuck halfway, and the water on that side climbed faster. The narrowboat leaned a finger-width toward the lower wall, and the hemp loop rasped against iron.
A sudden rustle pulled Theo’s attention upstream. His friend Paul, still tossing leaf fragments into the basin, had slipped on damp earth; the pieces scattered, speckling the glossy water. Theo jogged the ninety paces to reach him, boots squelching where yesterday’s rain lingered. They brushed mud from Paul’s sleeve and waited for the gust to ease. When Theo returned, the boat listed more sharply. The surface tilted, and a wedge of twigs rode at the vanguard of the stronger swirl. The intake beneath the clear side had been partially blocked; clay clouds hovered around a pale branch caught near the slot.
Gripping the smooth ash shaft of the boat hook, Theo knelt and probed through the foam. The branch shifted, releasing a rich smell like resinous pine warmed by sunlight. He levered once more; the stick bobbed free, then drifted toward the hull and slid between steel and stone, offering quiet mediation that stopped the scrape of metal on masonry. If the paddle stuck again, the chamber would fill crooked all afternoon, so he kept the hook ready. The rope slackened as levels evened, and Theo leaned over the beam, following the branch’s slow spin with narrowed eyes, his hands still tightening around the wet ash pole.
