Border Tilted in Damp Clay-

English 原文
A low wooden hum rolled across the table as the rolling pin skimmed over Odette’s clay slab, leaving a fine trail of pale dust. The slab felt cool and slightly sticky beneath her palms; one thumb press made a neat dimple that slowly rose again. At the shelf four paces away, the favourite rosette stamp had been taken by another student, so she chose a medium border block whose handle stayed warm from sunlight. A tabby cat lounged on the windowsill above, tail flicking each time a stamp met clay. Odette planned to launch a full rectangle of borders before the surface stiffened; the clay still offered enough give to merit six crisp impressions.
Her first press sounded a soft thud and faint squelch, yet one side of the pattern lay deeper, tilting downhill. A hair-thin fracture cut through that drooping corner, and a shallow settlement of powder lined the wood grain near her wrists. Warm light from the window would promote faster drying; already the outer skin felt firmer against her knuckle. She slid a sponge along the slab, searching for the cause until her fingertips found a knot of denser clay—colder, harder, unwilling to compress. The discovery cost precious minutes, and she judged the merit of completing a full frame was slipping away. If the surface tightened further, the stamp would only ghost the design.
She weighed two choices: soften the whole slab with a damp cloth across the room, or accept a partial border while softness remained. The cloth lay near the sink, behind the cat now grooming a paw; the walk would leave the stamp unguarded and the clay uncovered longer. With a quick breath, she aligned the block along two opposite edges and pressed firmly, avoiding the dense patch. Two borders appeared, their depth even. As the remaining moisture thinned, she stopped, brushed stray crumbs aside, and carried the half-framed tile to a lower rack shelf. Sunlit dust hung above the cleared space on the table.
