Citrus soap vapour curled upward while Drake lowered a square wire frame into the bucket and waited for silence. A thin, silver sheet formed, its rainbow bands drifting like slow rivers across steel-grey glass. He aimed to carry the fresh film toward the wind-shadow wall, where colours lasted longer under pale fence shade. First, he lifted too quickly; the membrane tore and a dozen droplets splashed back with tiny clicks. On the second try he slowed elbows, letting gravity drain before the frame cleared the surface. Earlier, the thicker layer had been stirred gently, so the solution clung with even weight. He had smoothed a rough solder joint with tape, hoping the fresh edge would no longer start a streak.
