English 原文
A coil of tape, a palm-sized mirror, and a folded butterfly net lay across the carpet in afternoon sunlight. The white card had been fixed with clear tape earlier; its surface stayed smooth and slightly cool to the touch. Dust motes drifted through the beam, and the curtain cloth warmed enough to feel soft under a tapping finger. Yara knelt beside the first-bounce table, the carpet weave pressing tiny ridges against her knees. She aimed to send the reflected spot along three mirrors toward the white card Cal had taped to the far wall. The current mirror rested on a warm paperback; the softened cover sagged, and the plastic edge slid a fraction. Light jumped hand-span wide, missing the card, while a soft thud rose from the book knocking against the table leg. She nudged the mirror twice, yet each tiny movement worsened the angle and scattered brightness across furniture.
She crawled toward the bookshelf, careful not to cast her own shadow across the beam wandering above the floor. Her fingertips brushed a wide apothecary jar packed with brittle sage stems; the glass felt cool and satisfyingly heavy. Thinking the weight would steady the mirror, she swapped supports, pressing the smooth back of the mirror against the jar. The curved surface turned the beam into a blurry oval, so the distant card blurred like chalk rubbed across cloth. “Almost there,” Cal murmured, eyes still on his novel as his arm kept the curtain gap unchanged. If she had kept the mirror leaning on that glass, the spreading patch would have slipped entirely off the target.
She lifted the jar aside and gripped a sandstone outcrop bookend; its rough edges scratched pleasantly against her palms. Planted on the carpet, the stone stayed firm even when a chill draft rolled from the picnic icebox near the door. Now the light hopped mirror to chair to stone and landed crisp and round at the center of the card. She pressed the stone deeper, and a faint smell of warmed sage stayed above the fibres of the carpet.
