English 原文
The ribbon spool had slipped once already, and Felix pinched it between two damp fingers. Beside him, Clara steadied a handful of yellow tulips while their parent lingered by the greeting-card rack, turning pages in silence. Felix aimed to wrap the flowers himself, so he pulled a sheet of tissue from the roll closest to the work counter. The paper felt cool yet gummy, as if a thin coat of dew covered it. He folded one edge toward the stems with a systematic crease, but a sudden hiss floated overhead. Fine spray dotted his knuckles, the tissue darkened, and a neat tear opened along the fold. "Oh!" Clara gasped. Felix had practised this process before, yet the sheet now sagged like wet bread, refusing to hold shape around the slippery stems.
He reached for a fresh sheet and tried again, adjusting only the angle of his grip. This time he set the fold deeper, keeping his thumbs flat instead of pinching. The mist returned, weaker now, yet moisture still seeped through the fibres and split the corner. A soft click near the ceiling caught his ear; inspiration flashed when he traced the sound to a thin nozzle above the rolls. The tissue had been dampened by each timed burst, and the ribbon spool beneath had been sprinkled as well, causing its earlier slide. Felix shifted the entire bouquet two steps to the left, out of the drifting cloud, and continued to toil away at the same folding rhythm. The third sheet stayed firm, though beads of water glimmered on the abandoned spot behind him, marking the limited reach of the spray.
Hours later, after the evening bell announced closing and the lights dimmed, the work counter stood empty. A faint ring of dried droplets circled the tissue roll that Felix had left behind, and the nozzle released another burst that scattered against nothing but air. By then the wrapped tulips lay inside a vase at home, yet inside the quiet shop a single droplet slid down the stainless edge of the counter, drifting toward the drain.
