Mabel shielded her eyes with a sand-specked hand and crouched beside a narrow, water-dark crevice on the mid-shelf rock. Her sketchbook waited on a warm upper boulder, too distant for quick notes about the tiny striped crab below. Across the crevice, a palm-sized shard from a greenhouse pane caught full sunlight and threw hard glare across the water. She had tried to shove the glass aside earlier, yet slippery algae and tight barnacles rolled it straight back each attempt. The piece had been pinned by a ridge of barnacles, and each push only made slick algae smear her fingers. Jonas, adjusting the padded strap on his designer camera, stepped nearer for seaweed photos and remained unaware of her squinting struggle.

A fresh wave slapped the lower ledge, sending cold spray upward that speckled the glass and stirred sediment into cloudy spirals. If the tide had turned faster, her entire chance to study the crab would have vanished before her pencil touched paper. She waited, rubbing dry salt grains into circles while loose imagination filled unfinished lines across memory rather than any visible surface. Once the water cleared, she slid her fingertips toward the shard, the move slow enough to show perseverance to any watching gull. Propped against a folded lump of kelp, the mirror-bright surface angled sunlight straight into the crevice and lit the hidden floor. The crab glowed copper, and an anemone beside it spread pale tentacles like an oxeye daisy floating under trembling honey-colored ripples.

Mabel sketched quickly, dark pencil strokes flowing while reflected light kept the shapes clear inside the narrow pocket of water there. Jonas noticed the sudden glow yet continued clicking shutters, the extra light simply adding detail to his composition without extra equipment today. Her elbow, resting on crunchy salt, pressed the crystals into a narrow crack, and the packed layer blocked a thin escaping trickle. Minutes later the pool stayed clearer, though she had forgotten the dam entirely when she wiped sand from her knees and stood. Fresh spray hissed below the ledge, and the restless tide still climbed, rattling pebbles until it swallowed the lower mark and advanced.

梅貝爾迅速描繪，黑色鉛筆線條在反射的光下保持清晰。約納斯注意到突然的亮光，但只是繼續按快門，額外的光線剛好替他的構圖加細節。她的手肘壓在脆鹽上，把晶粒擠進一條窄縫，結實的鹽層堵住原本滲出的細流。幾分鐘後，水池更清澈；她站起身拍掉膝上的沙時，早忘了那道小堤。下方再度響起水花，潮水仍在上爬，搖動礫石，越過下方刻痕繼續推進。
