English 原文
A bright-orange shoelace lay beside the tide pool, its aglet swollen and dark; along the rock a fine rust-brown streak showed where it had been dragged by yesterday’s retreating water.
Clara crouched, the shoelace between finger and thumb. Hardly had she lifted the nylon when the pool replied with a soft plop, surface tension breaking like a whispered protest. The lace had started to unravel; loose filaments waved under the water, the click-click of a hermit crab’s borrowed shell tapping them in search of food. Beneath the sheen, the basin sounded alive: an anemone’s slow murmur, distant gulls bouncing echoes off the headland, and beyond, a single wave meeting stone with a damp clang. Her canvas bag, heavy with sieves from a recent pollution control workshop, rested against her boot.
Jude, a conservator from the town museum, knelt opposite. His pencil moved as though the threads were spun glass. A sprig of yarrow slipped from the pages of his sketchbook, landing with a faint hiss of stems on wet rock. The pool had become a nurturing environment for minute plankton; cloudy bands drifted close to the nylon, shimmering whenever Clara’s shadow passed. Her sleeves already damp, she pushed the lace higher, and what caught Jude’s pencil was the tiny crab now perched on the raised ridge, claws opening and closing in the rhythmic hush. She paused, shoulder tightening; removing the lace would clear litter, yet the creature had woven its routines around the synthetic strand.
“Leave a section,” Jude said, voice low so the stone seemed to swallow it. Clara’s hand hung in mid-air. Were the crab a polished bead instead of a living shell, the choice would feel simple; the sound of its tapping made that simplicity vanish. She slid a pocket knife from the bag, blade glinting, then hesitated once more as the breeze carried a sharper iodine note across the pool, the echo of change already present. With a careful angle she trimmed the lace, releasing only the loose, drifting half while the anchored segment settled back, threads taut enough for the crab to regain balance.
When she returned the shortened piece to the original spot, the brown streak beside it came into focus: it was not rust but a trail of dried algae the lace had scraped free earlier. Water lapped, quieter now, and salt crystals glittered along the groove. Clara pressed the orange remnant flat against the rock, watching the crab resume its measured, clicking patrol.
