English 原文

Polishing cloth already sliding along the first prism, Floyd tasted salt gathering on his upper lip, sharper than yesterday and tinged with a faint metallic tang. The slow rotation carried scattered colors over his knuckles, and, only here, did his shoulders feel free of the staircase weight below. A brass paperweight shaped like a sleeping walrus kept the ledger open beside him; its smooth back touched his tongue when he adjusted it, the coppery taste lingering like an old coin.

He moved to the winding drum. Seldom had the glare within the lantern room tasted so metallic, and the air turned almost sweet when he bit the graphite point of his pencil before whispering, “Flash number twenty.” The winding chain ended in a compact loop of hemp; halfway along it hung the familiar knot where he once tied a spare cloth. Peaceful as a clock, that knot usually brushed his waist, yet tonight it nudged the silver buttons of his coat. The subtle difference stopped his hand mid-crank.

The knot now at chin height, he drew it closer and pressed its briny fibre against his teeth, searching for frayed strands. None appeared, so he stepped back, eyes running up the glass ribs, down the floor plates, across the ledger lines, and finally to the low rail where tidal salt crusted thicker than before. Were the lantern room settling even a finger’s breadth, the rope would sag—not rise. He stood still, tasting doubt as dry as chalk, then crouched to trace a pale ring on the pedestal—metal once hidden beneath the walrus weight, now exposed.

He folded the polishing cloth over that ring, closed the ledger, and rested the walrus paperweight on top. His boots tapped once, twice, then faded down the spiral toward the keeper’s quarters.

The mercury bath whispered under the lens, unhurried. Cloth fibres trapped saline crystals inside their weave, the pale ring now half-veiled by soft folds, and the knot hung silent, suspended above the compact loop, its loose ends stiff with dried brine.
