English 原文
Every afternoon Nestor lifted the brass water cup, tilted it, and let a clear bead fall into the inkstone; today, a thin, chalky streak clung to the cup’s rim, and the bead tasted oddly metallic as it slipped across his lower lip. Rarely had the familiar sip carried such a sharp tang. He set the cup down, traced the streak with a fingertip, and the residue powdered away like crushed shell. The room, otherwise muted, waited. Irving hummed beside the brush rack, yet even that low note could not drown the metallic after-taste. Nestor wetted the inkstone anyway, the drop dissolving with a dull pop, and the black pool breathed out pine soot mixed with a mild, briny edge.
Before the first stroke, the ink stick circled the well, its edge rasping gently; the slow rhythm fostered a dense, velvet liquid, each pass deepening the colour until the surface looked dark enough to swallow light. If the cup were clean, that bitterness might have vanished, yet it lingered, insinuating itself into the taste of the air. Nestor plunged the brush tip into the glossy pool. The hairs swelled, heavy as soaked moss, and subtle weight tugged at his wrist. A soapstone lemur, carved to steady thin papers, crouched near the blotting cloth; its tail, once pale, carried a dried stripe of midnight ink. The small beast stood motionless, mineral beside liquid, silent witness to the thickening flavour.
He lowered the brush toward fresh paper, then stopped, wrist hovering. After a breath, he chose to draw the line despite the unfamiliar tang. It was the slight rise of ink along the stroke that caught his eye: the path tapered cleanly, yet feathery edges bloomed sooner than expected, as though the paper itself sipped the metal. Shoulders shifting, he pressed harder, testing a bolder track. Fingers still damp, he adjusted pressure, trimmed a flourish, and stepped back. The earlier residue had slipped into the drop, and now the ink travelled wider, its edges silvering. He exhaled, rolled the sleeve higher, and turned a fresh sheet sideways, unsure whether to continue or scrub the cup before grinding anew.
His decision arrived wordlessly. He lifted the lemur, balanced it on the corroded rim, and placed the brush across the porcelain rest. A quiet passed; then Irving stacked the used sheets while Nestor gathered the cloth. Absolute stillness holding, he wiped the rim once, folded the cloth, and set it aside. Pale dust freckled the weave, evidence enough of the morning’s unseen change. He strode toward the sliding panel. He slid the wooden door shut.
