English 原文
Cedric's thumb settled on the joystick cap before he registered the room, tracing the shallow crescent worn there by countless shifts. Cool nylon yielded under the pressure, and a muted click rose from the spring inside. Beside the console an unused headset dangled, cable looped tight, leaving a wedge of bare carpet where a second chair once rolled. Salt air leaked past the rubber door seal and braided with warm-plastic fumes from the humming circuit tower. Those layered smells mapped the room’s peculiarities faster than sight, so only after inhaling did Cedric lift his gaze to the central screen, where the ROV’s lamp hung in black water like a lantern locked inside night.
The depth counter slipped from 217 to 218 metres; with each metre the cable spool murmured, then the brake snapped back. Cedric pencilled the new figure on a clipboard already crowded with slanted columns and graphite smears. Beneath that board lay pages once handled by a travelling botanist, their damp edges puckered into waves. Ink diagrams warned of a forgotten metal framework abandoned on this slope, so Cedric watched for straight lines among the drifting grit. What appeared, instead, was a pale lattice entering from the screen’s right margin, its pattern so delicate it might have been crumpled packing film. Ivan pushed the door open a hand’s width and asked, “Current holding?”; the steady columns already answered him.
Cedric balanced the stick, waiting for the one-second echo between command and picture to settle. The lattice glided nearer; lamp glare slid across it, and the shape flexed like cartilage rather than scrap. He tilted the camera a single degree, and the form revolved: soft rim, pulsing mantle, no corners anywhere. The translucent mollusk carried a shell stretched into one tapered horn. Under the beam that horn shone so clean nursery books might sketch it as a unicorn. Cedric’s fingers hovered above the throttle; they stayed suspended a breath longer, then eased away, leaving the thrusters idle. Swirling silt curtained the creature, its own peculiarities of motion rewriting the scene before the image froze.
Silence followed except for the gull call outside and the constant hum of fans, yet the vacant headset seemed louder than either. Cedric tapped the cable brake to hold depth; the lever answered with the expected click, softer than before. Ivan lingered at the threshold, but no further words passed; the room’s narrowed air carried brine, resin, and an echo of char from distant solder joints. Cedric noted the unchanged depth on the clipboard, slid the pencil back, and watched the black water reclaim the beam. Then his thumb rested a shade lighter on the joystick’s familiar, worn groove today.
