Three evenings earlier, the stairway had echoed with a drier rhythm. He had descended carrying a linen parcel of toasted rice hulls, their light bulk shifting against his elbow as he walked. The barrels then sat motionless, each bung jacketed in fresh wax that cooled into glossy ridges. He untied the string and poured the rice hulls into a narrow glass column. Bubbles meandered upward through the settling juice; they rolled with stubborn playfulness, never hurrying, never quite repeating a path. The steady rise kept the log numbers true. He replaced the column before listening for drips—there were none, only the low pulse of liquid pressing evenly against the staves.

Now, that single drop hung like a question. He set the chalk aside, curled both palms around the curved wood, and nudged. The line he drew this time arrived from a new angle—slower, deliberate, following the stave’s slight arc instead of fighting it. A faint hush replaced the drip, and somewhere above, the clock’s distant tick drifted through the stairwell, vast yet almost lost inside the cellar’s cooled breath.
