English 原文
Kieran swung from the stern deck to the towpath, boot soles tapping the worn sill that bridged boat and land; behind him the engine muttered, and warm exhaust curled past his ear. He crossed the narrow footbridge into the lock chamber, oak gates rising on either side like battered doors of a long-shut barn. Moss darkened the lower wall, a residue that marked last night’s waterline, and a lace of phosphorescent algae shimmered faintly where the sun missed the stone. The novelty of this patch—light alive in daylight—drew his gaze long enough for the rope to slacken, so he tightened it before moving on, palm sliding across the tactile grain of the balance beam.
The upper paddle spindle waited beside its iron gear, socket shining through layers of flaked paint. Wood and metal met with practical felicity when he dropped the windlass over the square head; the fit felt exact, no wobble. He cranked, muscles winding water upward from the canal above, and a tremendous swirl echoed through the sluice ports. The boat lifted by slow inches, yet the strain on the bow rope translated into a ragged creak, paint scuffing against the wall. Solving the rise pressed a new concern into view—Problem B ridden on Problem A’s tail—so he paused mid-turn, shoulder steady, noting how each extra inch of height pinched hull against moss-slick stone.
He loosened the rope to grant slack, but the chamber answered with a sideways drift that threatened the stern instead; compromise, not victory, formed the only path forward. A heron flapped over the hedge, wings brushing air like pages riffling, and its reflection twisted across the agitated surface. Kieran reset his stance, drove the windlass half a turn, then retreated two steps to test the ropes again, mind measuring distance without naming the calculation. Water surged, settled, surged, each pulse mirrored by his shifting weight, as though the lock’s battered timbers and his ribs sought the same rhythm and had yet to agree.
When levels finally aligned, he lifted the windlass free—same wrist flick as before—yet now bright afternoon glare bounced from the wet beam, not the morning haze he remembered. He swung the gate with slow momentum, oak groaning while cool spray crackled against sun-warmed planks, and his hand repeated the familiar motion of guiding the balance beam home. Behind that gesture, moss dripped clean water instead of clinging silt, and the phosphorescent lace, momentarily exposed, faded under glare that refused to carry its glow.
