He replaced the sheet with a fresh one, raised the column a notch, and tried a longer exposure. Blacks spread too quickly, swallowing detail until the mountains turned featureless. Amos set the tongs down, palm resting on the bench, then withdrew his hand without lifting the print. Flora, rinsing photos near the drain, murmured, “Plenty of paper left.” He nodded, but his gaze stayed on the uneven tones spread across the print. Instead of starting again, he doused the projection beam, coiled the hose, and wiped stray droplets from the concrete floor.

As he moved, the hose swung in a slow arc, then settled against the drain tray. Amos lifted a dry print from yesterday, smoothing its curled corner between thumb and forefinger. A faint diagonal scratch scarred the sky, thin yet bright—a remnant unnoticed until now. The mark sliced the clouds like a sudden declaration across calm weather, echoing tonight’s pale stripe. He paused, leaning toward the enlarger, but did not cross the room. Tilting the glass carrier, he found two dust specks near the frame edge, each catching amber light.

A soft brush whisked the specks away; he seated the carrier, lowered the head, and aligned the easel again. Exposure time stayed brief; his finger hovered, slower than the earlier snap, before touching the button. The sheet slid into the tray, grey drifting outward until the landscape appeared, unbroken. He moved the tongs through each bath with measured strokes while the hose kept its quiet trickle. He pressed the timer once more, this time so lightly the click settled on the silence like a seed on still water.
