English 原文
Every afternoon, Oswin spread fresh paper across the observation tray, the motion echoing yesterday and the day before. Today, however, a damp curve the width of a thumbnail already darkened one corner, a quiet trace he could not place. A ceiling drip landed beside it, then another, each splash slower than the wall clock’s brass pendulum tick. The two tempos shared the room without agreement, one metallic, one watery; Oswin slid the heavy lens arm inward until the brass rim hovered above the stain. Under the circle of sharpened daylight, the mark feathered outward across fibres that, to the naked eye, had seemed blank.
He adjusted the lens lower; the focus snapped, revealing the paper’s fibres as woven fabric stretched across miniature valleys. The shallow arc shimmered like silt, its edge gathering tiny rivulets that drifted between strands whenever the next drop arrived. Oswin lifted the lens a centimetre, lost the clarity, then inched it back, his shoulders still while fingers made small corrections. "Right there," murmured Lilac by the window, her voice barely crossing the floorboards softly. The pendulum kept its four-beat swing; the drip lingered on three, their misaligned chorus building a patient accumulation of moisture that deepened the stain shade by shade.
A minute stretched, then another, and the clock’s beat slowed fractionally as its weights edged downward; the drip quickened when a breeze pushed roof water toward the gap. Without warning, both fell together—tick and splash striking in the same instant, the desk surface thrumming faintly beneath Oswin’s forearm. Inside the lens the arc fractured, branches surging outward like an estuary where tidal current collides with river flow. Small channels scored the paper until they resembled a ragged waterway edging a forgotten quayside. Oswin half-raised the tray, paused when the liquid crept toward the border, and chose stillness instead of rescue.
He set the pencil down, graphite tip resting against the tray’s brass lip, and leaned back so his breath no longer fogged the glass. The lens remained suspended, magnifying the miniature coastline as new droplets extended its deltas grain by grain. Light slid along the brass rim, then broke on the wet paper like sunset on distant water. Outside the circle everything blurred, yet within it the pattern kept rewriting itself again. Tick followed splash, splash followed tick, folding the afternoon into a single steady cadence. Oswin tapped the tray once, sending a ripple through the tiny coastline.
