The tear nudged valves out of rhythm; the pipes simply obeyed that stray command. So the mechanism itself was innocent. Etta considered swapping the song roll, then glanced toward the bellows, already breathing in steady tempo. Changing rolls mid-cycle would jolt the melody outside. She wiped her fingers on the magnolia rag, folded the torn edge back, and eased a strip of thin tape over the spikes.

She set the tape spool on the low stool and drew both hands away from the moving card. Oil kept its slow drip along the crankshaft; the repaired fold slipped beneath the metal finger without protest; outside, the lilting melody rolled on above the steady carousel hum.
