English 原文
Tess balanced on the balls of her feet, breath steady against the cool air, while a dark speck skimmed the meltwater beside the shrinking ice. The speck darted in quick triangles, revealing the angled legs of a lone water strider testing the pond’s fragile edge.
Blair shifted behind her; his boots sank a fraction, and mud tugged at his soles. A chisel hung loosely in his mittened hand, its weight forgotten, while sunlight spread a broad spectrum of reflected colours across the film of water. The scene held none of winter’s fear of the unknown; yesterday’s opaque surface had trapped that gloom in silence, yet today even the most gloomy shadow slipped beneath the moving mirror. Across the pond, a vacant strand of damp sand waited unmarked except for the crow prints that had already begun to soften.
Tess lowered another pebble onto the ice. It vanished with a muted gulp, absorbed like every pebble before it, and still the surface showed no complaint. She added a twig, then another; the system kept swallowing offerings without reply, and her thighs began to tremble from the long crouch. “One more,” Blair murmured, shifting his weight forward. She nodded, teeth resting on her lower lip, and reached for a final seed-pod. The pod touched the water, hesitated, then stayed afloat; for the first time a ring refused to spread. A breath later, the ice sheet sagged as a whole—no cracks, just a subtle settle—then parted along a faint seam, releasing a cluster of trapped bubbles that swarmed upward like hurried beads.
Where the bubbles cleared, the supposed lone strider multiplied; six, then ten identical bodies surfaced, each sliding away from the others as if startled by sudden room. The surprise was simple: a mirror trick had hidden a small hatch of nymphs beneath the glare, their legs pressed together until the threshold broke. Tess eased lower, knees brushing wet moss, and steadied both palms to regain balance. She repeated the gesture that had begun the afternoon—one careful reach—and let her fingertip rest against the nearest, still-glimmering nymph.
