English 原文
From the wooden landing that reached just into the shallows, Waverly watched the guide trace lazy patterns with a bamboo stick over the glassy surface. A parrotfish nibbled at branching coral, and the crunch joined a scattered discourse of gulls above the waterline. She had crossed this patch of reef on countless afternoons, yet the muted shapes below still arranged themselves like sheet music rewritten by light. The guide lifted the pole and nodded once; only then did Waverly step off the landing.
Water curled around her ankles as she settled onto a flat limestone slab, a notebook balanced across her knees. The brass magnifying glass—an heirloom from a long-gone great-grandparent—rested beside two sharpened pencils. She outlined the broad curvature of a plating coral, paused, then added smaller ribs where sunlight flickered. A viscous bead of sunscreen slid from her wrist and splashed onto the sketch, spreading a pale stain that forced her to start another line farther along the page. She kept pondering the rhythm between solid rock and living tissue, letting the tide’s slow pulse guide the graphite. "Small parrotfish, right under the plate coral," the guide said quietly and moved farther down the ledge.
A sudden gust swept inland; loose pages lifted, turned once, and skated across the water toward a drift of floating seagrass. Waverly lunged, slipped, and followed the papers as far as the damp sand permitted before the wind pinned them against a half-buried bucket left by earlier visitors. Retrieving each sheet required stooping among footprints while the gusts rattled palm fronds behind her. By the time she waded back, sunlight had shifted; slanted beams pierced the ripple field, and suspended grit made soft halos beneath the surface.
She reopened the notebook, now speckled with sand, and the reef beneath the viewer no longer resembled the morning’s quiet score. The same coral plate glowed amber along its rim, and thin shadows tightened every gap between branches. Her earlier lines looked overconfident beside this new lattice of color, so she rotated the page, set down the magnifying glass, and traced shorter, tentative marks that followed the fresh angles of light. When graphite touched paper, tiny salt crystals tumbled from her cuff onto the margin and clung there, catching the last glare like grains of frozen fire. The sting of sun-warmed salt still rested on her palm.
