A Scratch on the Knife Handle-

English 原文
Emory’s thumbs traced small circles along the cedar strip, coaxing a satiny edge before his head engaged.
The habit formed during winter evenings indoors, yet the bank stone now steadied him, cool and grainy.
Curl after curl of pale shaving dropped, garnish thin as herb slivers across an unused wooden plate.
Behind the shaving pile, the pond whispered through thaw, a mosaic of candle ice surrendering grain by grain.
Each drip struck the water with a muted tap, reminding him of fingers finding rhythm on a stretched drum.
The strip would crown a duck decoy; his prerogative was refining every curve before touching oil.
He rocked the blade again, cedar scent and steady palm weight eclipsing everything else.
A bellicose honk shattered the hush; two geese skidded onto the thin water, wings slapping like oars.
Their landing wave climbed the granite lip and sent his sandpaper packet sliding toward the mushy mud.
"Hey, easy," he muttered as droplets freckles his forearm, but the paper kept drifting.
He lurched up, boots sinking, and chased the escaping sheets before wind or water claimed them.
The scramble carried him past the birch, over roots still crusted with frost, then behind the reed pile.
There, he crouched, brushing grit off the soggy pages while the geese argued behind him in rising chorus.
By the time he stepped back to the stone, the sun had traveled, throwing a sharper angle across the work.
Meltwater now lapped over the ice rim, darkening it; liquid and crystal stood in uneasy reconciliation, neither willing to leave entirely.
The cedar strip, abandoned only minutes, looked altered; swollen fibers lifted like tiny feathers, refusing the earlier smoothness.
He lifted his carving knife, hesitated; the handle’s lacquer bore a new scratch, a subtle thread of wear that had escaped notice before.
The scratch caught on a callus when he rotated the grip, a prick of surprise that slowed the following stroke.
Within that pause, he sensed the grain differently, as if the tool, the wood, and the thawing edge all claimed quiet autonomy.
He set the knife down, pressed a thumbprint into the raised fiber, and watched it spring back stubbornly.
He chose a finer rasp instead of the blade, letting shorter strokes nibble at the uneven swell.
The new rhythm felt cautious, almost ceremonial, each rub trading a grain of cedar for a mote of orange sawdust that glimmered when the sun caught them.
Behind him, the geese drifted outward, their earlier skirmish forgotten; water rings widened until light erased them.
He paused once to wipe fingertips on the rag, only to find the cloth saturated, streaked with pond mud and resin.
Beside the cloth, the warped sandpaper packet drooped over the stone, its cardboard spine darkening by the minute.
